Offshore Development on a Cruise Ship

It’s an interesting idea. A company called SeaCode is outfitting a cruise ship to house 600 software developers about 3 miles offshore in international waters. They claim this will create high-end software engineering jobs in the U.S. but reading their material suggests this would be very few jobs compared to the low-paid masses living on the ship.

They plan to do 24 hour development using “pods” of developers that work in shifts and live together on the ship. It will be interesting to see the impact of this type of environment on software development productivity.

The possible good news for U.S. developers is that SeaCode claims they are creating their company in response to problems U.S. companies have had with existing off shore development activities. However, the company’s web site doesn’t provide any specific references to documented problem cases.
